Dead Daphnia

I bought a live daphnia sample in the mini auction at our June meeting. I set them up in a plastic tub on the back porch and was successfully getting them to reproduce. I had increased the culture to three tubs and was nearing the point where I would feel comfortable harvesting some daphnia for feeding.

Yesterday, I did my usual partial water change. An hour later, the daphnia were all dead. I pulled the aged water from the usual aquarium, but I'm an idiot! I had forgotten that I had put a No-Pest strip over it to kill aphids on my plants. It appears that the water had absorbed enough Dichlorvos to kill the daphnia. Dang it! I new Dichlorvos would kill insects. I didn't think about it killing crustaceans. I hope this didn't mess up my marble crayfish and her eggs in any way. (She seems okay.)

At least the aphid infestation is now gone.

they are very sensitive to chemicals. I use Flubendazole to kill MTS and I've forgotten and used old water from a treated tank before to put in my daphnia culture with the same results...
