Daphnia

Post by Sillyscienceteacher »

I have had a culture going for a few months. I've been feeding algae water, which was working out well until the weather turned. Any suggestions to boost growth or sustain during the winter months?

Corey and I have been using a yeast slurry. Put it in the daphnia container, and then don't feed again until the water clears. Denny
If it was easy, anyone could do it!

I've also used the live phytoplankton and spirulina powder to feed daphnia before.

Yeah, I forgot about the spirulina powder. I add it to the yeast, and then feed the mixture. Denny

I also add Garlic and Paprika to the yeast mixture. Not sure why but was in several recipes for Daphnia food. It makes them more Reddish and the room smells like I just made something Italian.

good to know. I know garlic is often used for health benefits in fish and paprika is supposed to help coloring so those would be good additions to to the daphnia if you are feeding them to fish for sure... Kyle

here's some pics of my daphnia cultures and green water. For some reason, this 10g went from crystal clear to pea green over a couple of months. I guess the chemistry is just right. I didn't do anything different than before, it just happened. I have 4 adult x. milleri and one baby in there, some where.
I just take a gallon out every other day and dump in the tubs. The cultures are in 2 tubs out in the garage with a flourescent light on it 12 hours a day, an air stone in each tub slightly bubbling. When it did get down to around 10 degrees, I put a small heater in there turned way down, just enough to keep the ice from forming.

cool.. I always have greenwater when I don't have daphnia. then when I have daphnia I can't get the stuff to grow :)

be careful not to transfer any of the babies over to the dapnia tank (speaking from experience :o )

What species of Anubias is that in the upper left corner? I have 7 or 8 that I split off from the original plant and don't know what to call them exactly.

 guess I should pay more attention. I thought the person posting the pic was the one asking what it was

Cory, if you already know what it is you can just post that instead of having to take another pic :) Kyle
