NWAAS Native Fish Collecting Trip & Picnic
Saturday, May 10, 2025, at 10:00 a.m.
POSTPONED!
Sorry! THIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED, due to rain and high water. We will try to reschedule It in the near future.
Some information may be subject to change, particularly due to weather or water levels. Watch this message, and any replies to it, for the latest updates.
COLLECTING TRIP
It will be a different kind of fun in May! Instead of our club's usual focus on freshwater tropical fish, we will visit local streams to see what cold-water species we can catch! Mostly, we practice catch-and-release, as a fun way to see what lives in the streams near us. Some people take home a few fish or critters for their tanks, as many local fish species are quite attractive in color or form, particularly during breeding season.
This is a family-friendly event! Everyone is welcome to participate (within a reasonable group size). Bring your kids. Bring a friend. We normally have at least one person on hand who is knowledgeable about native fishes to help identify them, and give guidance. Bring your camera!
Meeting Place
We will meet at the back of the parking lot of Ace Hardware in Pea Ridge, across from McDonald's. From there, we will travel to a club member's private property, in southern Missouri, that has a stream.
Requirements
1. Fishing license: IF 16 YEARS OLD OR OLDER, YOU MUST HAVE A VALID MISSOURI FISHING LICENSE TO PARTICIPATE. YOU WILL BE REQUIRED TO SHOW IT before starting. Those without licenses are welcome to observe, but may not touch any nets or equipment. You may buy a one-day license for $9. Be sure to correctly choose either the resident or non-resident license, depending on where you live. Annual licenses are also available.
You can obtain a Missouri fishing license here:
https://mdc.mo.gov/permits/fishing-permits
2. Gear: You must bring your own nets and buckets, though some members may have extras on hand to borrow. Some people use hand nets. Some use seines. We've even seen cast-nets on past trips. Five gallon buckets with lids are ideal for transporting any fish you decide to keep. Occasionally, someone will bring a small aquarium for photographing fish.
3. Liability Waiver: You will be required to sign a short liability waiver, exempting both the club and the property owner from liability due to accidents, etc.—not that we expect to have any!
PICNIC
There will be a picnic afterward, around noon or so. If you want to stay for the picnic, please bring a side dish or dessert, and your own drinks. The club will provide sandwiches, plates, napkins, silverware, etc. It's not settled, yet, but we'll either be grilling burgers and hot dogs, or have lunch meats on hand.
RSVP: So that we can plan how much food to have on hand, and other logistics, please RSVP to info@nwaas.com if you plan to attend.
