I have a couple of questions before you decide to venture down the mandarin highway.
First, what size tank are you thinking of keeping this guy in? Also what are the other fish you have in the tank?
I would not suggest keeping a mandarin in a tank less than 75 gallon tank with no small wrasse species that will compete for pods. Even after all these requirements are met you may still have to resort to buying pods more frequently than you would like.

only have a 55 gallon, with 2 blue damsels, a maroon clown, and a scooter blenny.

You would have to get rid of the scooter blenny as he is currently eating your pod population as we speak. Your best bet would be to make absolutly positive the mandarin is eating frozen mysis before purchasing. This is the only wa you could have both of those fish in a 55 gallon.
