Lake Trip - Fish ID?

Post by Sundance »

Hello all!

I recently went to Swepco Lake in Gentry, AR. I got a few pics and some video of some small fish. I think some were "Sun Perch". Others were shiny green.

I've posted pics and video in my blog posting here:

If anyone can ID these fish, I'd find it interesting.

Thanks!

Definitely a sunfish or sun perch in the first picture.

I would guess the second picture/movie is also a sunfish species, but honestly I have no idea. Identifying fish from a picture like that is very difficult. My guess is based off of their movement patterns and the 'green' description.

I would agree with Kevin that the fish in the video also appear to be sunfish based on the movement pattern. That's just the way small sunfish swim.

Thanks, guys!

Is it possible to keep Sun Fish as a native species?

Quite possible. They do tend to be a bit more pugnacious and need a bit larger tank for many of the species, but they are generally very easy to keep. I'm not sure about Arkansas, but Missouri considers any sunfish under 4" to be baitfish, and they can be collected by nets. Larger than 4" can still be kept, but must be caught on rod and reel to be legal.
