Sponge Filter Replacement "?"'s.

Ive seen replacement sponges for sponge filters. When would that ever become necessary? I never had sponge filters till I got back into discus seven months ago.

Some fish will pick at the filter and tear it apart. Other times the sponge itself will break down after years of use. Some cheaper sponges will also become compacted and not allow water to pass through them.
