New Discus Book

Post by dennysfishroom »

The club has received notice of a special price for Blehers new discus book. It has over 800 pages and 3000 maps and pictures. They are listing at 89 Euros (don't know the conversion off the top), and that includes shipping and handling. If you're interested, I can forward the email to you. Denny
If it was easy, anyone could do it!

A Euro is about $1.38 so that makes the book about $123. ;)

Bleher's Discus Volume 1 is not a new book (published 2006), but is not well known. (And it's not cheap, so not well circulated!) I had Heiko autograph a copy for me a couple of years ago. :) I must say that it is an awesome book. It's nearly 700 pages and weighs about five pounds. There is nothing like it. It covers discus in every possible detail. I dare say you could take every discus book ever written and, in total, they wouldn't add up to what is in this book-- with one caveat. This book is labeled as volume 1. It is strictly about wild discus.

Volume 1 covers history, taxonomy, distribution, variants in nature, natural habitats, and collecting. Presumably, breeding and tank-raised strains will be covered in a future volume. This book is not about discus in the aquarium. Rather, it is about discus in South America. Heiko is a well known explorer and fish collector. He has discovered many new fish species and goes to places where others are unwilling. This book is loaded with photographs of the fishes, the collectors, the habitats, the foods, the parasites, the local peoples, and so much more. Though I don't know, I'm hoping that the flurry of recent publicity for this book may be an effort to raise funds to print volume 2!

Bleher's Discus is obviously not a book for everyone. The price alone would keep it out of most people's libraries. But any discus afficionado's money would be well spent on this volume. Even though I don't keep discus, I found the book fascinating for its traveloguelike uniqueness.

Anyway, I'm not looking to lend my copy, but you're all welcome to view it on a visit. ;)

Since Denny didn't post the link, I'll post it in the following message.

89 Euros is approximately 120 US Dollars, so a little less than Kenna and I pay for our text books.
