Box turtles

Post by dennysfishroom »

I haven't seen a lot of box turtles this year. Could be because of the drought. This morning I was walking out to get the paper, and there was an Ornate or 3 toed box turtle crossing the driveway. Pretty pattern on the shell, and front legs with bright yellow/orange spots. A couple hours later I was looking out my office window, and I saw another box turtle getting a drink from my waterfall. I know it was a different turtle because it was pretty much a solid drab olive colored shell. I did get some pictures of him. It also looks to me as if the red eared sliders have grown quite a bit this summer, also. I'll be bringing them in in a few weeks, and can tell for sure. I suppose I really should be measuring them each time I transfer them. Denny

Now that you mention it, I don't think I've seen a single box turtle this year, either.

I've seen a few on the road, but not very often compared to previous years. Denny

I added some pictures in the Gallery of the two types of box turtles I've seen here in the last 2 weeks. Denny

The first one looks like a three-toed box turtle and the second one an ornate box turtle.

I picked a three-toed box off the road yesterday and placed him in the ditch. Usually I pick up from 4 to 6 in Bella Vista, but that was the first one this year.
