Washing Sand

Post by lois1909 »

What's the best way to wash sand so it all doesn't float to the top and end up on the lawn?

Define the sand you're talking about. Actual sand is difficult because it's so fine. Neither sand no gravel "floats", but if you fill the bucket too full and/or use too much water pressure, it will be washed out of the bucket. Use a small amount of material in the bucket, and swirl the sand/gravel with your hand as you add water. Then carefully dump the water out and repeat as often as necessary until the water comes out clear. Dumped the washed material out into the aquarium, and then repeat until you have enough sand or gravel in the aquarium. Denny
If it was easy, anyone could do it!

I use pool filter sand which is heavier so it doesn't get stirred up as easily and it comes pre-cleaned when you buy it new so you don't have to wash it unless you were cleaning it from previous use. Kyle
