Description and Bio
Come learn how to create new strains of fishes through careful, selective breeding. Maybe you can create your own new strain!
Greg Sage, MEd., began selling guppies from his bedroom while in middle school in Ohio, and today runs Select Aquatics, a fishroom of 100+ tanks. For 15 years, Select Aquatics has specialized on rare livebearers, particularly the goodeids. A line of Pethia padamya "Odessa" has also been selectively bred here, starting in 2009. The green dragon pleco was also developed here, starting in 2010, and a new morph of the Ilyodon furcidens is about to be introduced to the hobby, selectively bred here sine 2004.
Efforts to breed for healthy and consistent stock began around 1990, and 47 different strains and species have been distributed to the hobby through Select Aquatics over the last 15 years. In this talk, photos and stories document the development of many of these fish, including the Ilyodon furcidens (the trout goodeid), the Ancistrus green dragon, the Select Aquatics line of Odessa barbs, and the Xiphophorus alvarezi "Gold" swordtail, amongst others.
Chairman of the American Livebearer Association from 2000—2004, Greg has published numerous articles in hobbyist publications on livebearers, livebearer husbandry, selective breeding, and automatic water changing systems. He also produces presentations on YouTube, as "Select Aquatics Presents", and "Select Aquatics Questions" on each of the species at Select Aquatics, where he answers questions from customers with videos from the fishroom. Each morning he still responds to emails answering questions on freshwater husbandry and customer concerns. Greg resides in Erie, Colorado, and can be reached at selectaquatics@gmail.com.
