I didn't have any good photos of a jewel cichlid (
Hemichromis bimaculatus) because the specimens in stores are always too young to show good color. So, a while back, I bought four juveniles and threw them into a 70-gallon community to grow up and color out. They've been coming along nicely, and I was rewarded with their first spawn last Saturday (
photo below). The male is still guarding fry, but he's got them hidden at the back of the tank amongst the plants, so I have yet to see them. Hopefully, they'll survive in the community long enough for me to get a shot of them, too.
